AdventHealth Central texas hospital is partnering with Central Texas College to host

A Comprehensive Lifestyle Intervention/ orthopedic study

The Comprehensive Lifestyle Intervention Program (CLIP) research study is for individuals who have previously been identified as candidates for either Hip or Knee Joint Replacement Surgery but deemed suboptimal surgical candidates due to a BMI over 35 but under 50 and another medical issue such as Diabetes Mellitus and therefore ineligible for the needed joint replacement. The program will focus on nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, avoidance of harmful substances and behavioral interventions with the goal of transforming these individuals into acceptable surgical candidates for joint replacement surgery. The program focuses on the six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine that have been proven to promote weight loss and improve important health biometrics.

The Program

CLIP meets three mornings a week, for 2.5 hours per session, for 12 weeks. Each interactive group session is led by a health professional whose goal is to empower you to make long-term health changes.

Nutrition classes are led by a registered dietician who will guide you in using food as medicine to improve your health. Activities include cooking demonstrations and a field trip to the local grocery store in addition to general classroom instruction.

Exercise classes, conducted by a trained kinesiologist, will give you the opportunity to participate in water aerobics and learn exercises that you can modify to do in your own home.

Pre and Post measurements - including weight, BMI, direct measurement of body fat, fasting bloodwork, and physical activity - will be recorded so that you can track your improvement over the 12-week program, anticipating start date Mid January 2023. Your progress will also be communicated to your primary care and orthopedic providers, who will continue to manage your care. You will be provided with a FitbitTM wrist monitor to track physical activity, heart rate, and quality of sleep. AdventHealth will continue to monitor each participant over the next 6 months to measure progress and see if the short- term goal of knee or hip joint replacement surgery was achieved.

Do You Qualify?

To be considered as a candidate for CLIP, you must have a BMI of 35-50 and at least one other medical condition along with advanced osteoarthritis of the hip or knee that causes persistent pain and limited mobility. Additionally, the candidate must have previously discussed the need for joint replacement with their surgeon. The medical director of the program will work closely with your primary care and orthopedic physicians to review each candidate’s medical history and screen for any recent cardiovascular event. The final decision on the candidates readiness for surgery will be made by your orthopedist after completion of the 12 week program. Your primary care and orthopedic providers do not change and shall determine if the participant has transformed into an acceptable surgical candidate.

Eligibility and Acceptance into the research study lifestyle program are at the discretion of AdventHealthCentral Texas Hospital and the program Medical Director, Stephen Ralph MD ABIM DipACLM.

Interested candidates should fill out the Preliminary Application and see contact information on attached pdf flyer.
